.cfd domain names: registry, eligibility and rules

The IANA delegation record names Shortdot SA, based in Luxembourg, as the current sponsoring organisation for .cfd. ICANN's registry agreement page also lists ShortDot SA as the Operator, though the original 2014 contract was actually signed with DotCFD Registry Ltd, a UK company. IANA's own transfer report puts the sponsorship change to Shortdot SA at 2024-04-29, and a few third-party registrar sites, namebeta among them, still haven't updated and list the earlier UK operator. The technical backend runs through CentralNic, trading as Team Internet, which shows up as technical contact on the IANA record and is confirmed separately in industry contact-data research.

Here's how the roles break down. The registry is Shortdot SA: it holds the ICANN contract, sets the rules for who can register and what a name costs at wholesale, and runs the authoritative database of every .cfd domain through CentralNic's infrastructure. A registrar, say Namecheap, OpenProvider or DNSimple, is the company you actually buy from. It sells names at retail and handles support, DNS and renewal reminders on the registry's behalf. The registrant is whoever's name and contact details sit on the registration, which is to say, you. Nothing in the sources suggests Shortdot SA owns individual domain names, only the registry contract and the infrastructure behind the extension itself.

The registry sets no eligibility bar for .cfd. Anyone can register one, individual or company, based anywhere in the world. Registrars including Atak Domain confirm there's no paperwork at checkout: no residency proof, no sector connection, nothing.

The naming rules are technical, not gatekeeping. Registry-facing sources put the length at 1 to 63 characters, but at least one registrar, EuroDNS, enforces a 3-character minimum and only allows hyphens in the middle of the string. So check your registrar's own registration form before assuming the loosest limit applies, because it might not. Accented letters and non-Latin scripts are off the table entirely. The registry also holds back a list of premium names, priced however it likes rather than at the standard fee, and registrars flag these separately at checkout instead of quietly bundling them into normal pricing.

A .cfd transfer works like any other gTLD transfer. The losing registrar issues an authorisation code, the domain gets unlocked, and the gaining registrar submits that code to complete the move. Term length is fixed at purchase and runs from one year up to ten, per Namecheap. What happens if you miss a renewal is where things get murky, and registrars don't agree on the details. Openprovider offers a 40-day post-expiry restore window at no extra cost. Atakdomain instead describes a 20-day renewal window followed by a 30-day redemption period with a late fee attached, which pushes the real cut-off to around day 50. DNSimple, meanwhile, lists a $165 restore fee once a name lands in redemption. None of the sources here publish the registry's actual wholesale grace-period schedule, so treat whatever deadline your own registrar quotes as the one that counts.

The registry's marketing leans hard into fashion, design and lifestyle e-commerce, and lee.cfd, the live example everyone points to, backs that up. It fits the "Clothing, Fashion, Design" reading the string was built around. But there's a second meaning hiding in those three letters: "Contract for Difference", the financial trading term. Worth knowing before you commit to this string for a business site. A visitor could land on your domain expecting either one.

No source in this research shows the registry mandating HTTPS or HSTS at setup, and nobody flags a spam-filter or email-deliverability problem specific to .cfd. Treat it like any other newer gTLD: build up your sending reputation slowly, don't assume inboxes will trust you by default. Openprovider confirms IDN characters aren't supported and hyphens can only sit in the middle of the name, with a 1 to 63 character limit overall. As a primary domain, it works well for a niche fashion or e-commerce brand. For anything finance-related, think hard about whether that dual meaning helps your pitch or just confuses people, before you make it your main address rather than a secondary or redirect domain. One naming tip: pair a brand word with a fashion or product term. The single common words are mostly gone already.
