WHOIS
LOOKUP
Enter a domain to pull its registration record from live registry data: the registrar that manages it, when it was first registered, when it expires, how old it is, its status codes, and the nameservers it points to.
What is a WHOIS Lookup?
A WHOIS lookup is a free tool that returns a domain’s registration record from live registry data: the registrar that manages it, when it was first registered, when it expires, how old it is, its status codes, and the nameservers it uses. It reads the modern RDAP protocol, so some contact fields are redacted for privacy.
How does a WHOIS Lookup work?
- 01We query the authoritative registry over RDAP, the modern WHOIS.
- 02Registrar, key dates, status codes and nameservers are extracted.
- 03Domain age is calculated from the original registration date.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
RDAP is the modern, structured replacement for the old WHOIS protocol. It returns the same core facts, the registrar, registration and expiry dates, status and nameservers, in a consistent, machine-readable format. This tool uses RDAP for reliability, which is why some registrant contact fields may be redacted for privacy.
Why is the registrant name hidden?
Since GDPR, most registrars redact personal contact details behind a privacy service, so the registrant name and email are usually not public. The registrar, dates, status and nameservers remain visible, which is what matters for checking a domain’s standing.
Why did my domain fail to look up?
A few country-code TLDs do not publish RDAP data, so their records cannot be read this way. Double-check the spelling and that you entered the registrable domain (example.com), not a subdomain or full URL.
