The IANA delegation record names Registry Services, LLC, of Tempe, Arizona, as the sponsoring organisation for .vip. The ICANN Registry Agreement confirms the same company as operator, signed 22 January 2015 as a Base, Non-Sponsored gTLD contract.

Registry Services, LLC sits within the GoDaddy Registry portfolio, which handles backend infrastructure for a large stable of top-level domains. That's a fairly recent setup. At launch, the backend was run by Minds + Machines (also shown as I-Registry Ltd in early filings), and control passed to Registry Services, LLC in September 2021.

Worth keeping three roles straight. The registry is Registry Services, LLC: it holds the master database for every .vip domain and sets registry-level policy, things like term limits and premium name lists. The registrar is whoever you actually buy from, Namecheap, Dynadot, OpenProvider, take your pick, and they handle your account, billing and support. The registrant is you, the person or organisation whose name is on the registration. Registry rules apply no matter which registrar you use, but renewal reminders, privacy options and the quality of support all come down to that choice.

Who can register .vip, and what are the rules?

.vip has no eligibility restrictions. No requirement for local presence, no professional credential, no trademark, no membership of any kind. Anyone, anywhere, can register a name, a point confirmed by multiple registrars including Namefi and OpenProvider.

The registry still applies the usual syntax rules: names run from a minimum of a few characters up to 63, letters, numbers and hyphens are all fair game (just not a hyphen at the start or end), and a range of IDN scripts is supported depending on which registrar you use.

Where things actually differ is pricing, not eligibility. The registry marks certain names as premium, and those carry higher registration and renewal fees set by the registry itself rather than the registrar, according to TLD-List. No registrar can waive that fee, they can only pass on the registry's premium price. Standard, non-premium names are sold at whatever rate each registrar chooses, and rates vary a fair bit from one to the next, so check before you assume a name is sitting at the advertised base price.

Renewing, transferring and expiring a .vip name

Shifting a .vip domain between registrars follows the usual ICANN playbook: get a Transfer Authorization Code (the EPP auth code) from whoever holds it now, hand it to the registrar you're moving to, done. ICANN's transfer policy locks a domain for 60 days after first registration, after a registrar transfer, and often after you change the registrant, though whether that lock actually shows up as the clientTransferProhibited status is up to the registrar (ICANN Transfer Policy).

You can register a .vip for anywhere from 1 to 10 years, decided at registration or whenever you renew (Openprovider). ICANN's Expired Registration Recovery Policy forces every gTLD registry, .vip included, to offer a 30-day Redemption Grace Period once a domain is deleted, giving the old owner a window to claw it back (ICANN ERRP). Past that floor, the numbers you'll actually see depend on the registrar, not the registry: some quote a 5-day add/delete grace period plus a separate 30-day redemption window, others offer free restoration for up to 40 days, and restore fees swing anywhere from roughly 80 PLN to north of $100 depending on where you registered (Dynadot, Atak Domain). There's no single official restore fee set by the registry, so check your registrar's own terms before you let a .vip name lapse.

Editorial analysis

Is .vip right for this project?

.vip reads as a status word before it reads as a domain extension, so the string does most of the positioning work on its own. That is a useful shortcut in some contexts and a real liability in others.

  • Membership or loyalty programme for an existing brand. If you already own brand.com, something like rewards.brand.vip or members.brand.vip gives a subscriber area its own short, on-brand address. That lines up with how the extension actually gets used for membership and loyalty portals (Namefi). It works precisely because .vip sits alongside an established name rather than trying to replace it.
  • Personal brand or creator community. An athlete, musician or coach building a fan hub or paid community can run firstname.vip as their primary address. The word explains itself in a way a generic .com can't manage in three or four characters, and short names are still there to be had in this extension.
  • New consumer brand choosing a primary domain. This is where judgment matters more than fact. A business selling to a broad, price-sensitive or business-to-business audience risks looking presumptuous, or worse, risks getting lumped in with the crypto and casino sites that make up a visible chunk of .vip traffic (Register.Domains). For that kind of business, .vip belongs as a secondary or campaign domain redirecting to the main site, not as the address on the business card.

None of this is a ranking or trust judgment. Search engines treat .vip as a standard gTLD, full stop. It's a judgment about what the word signals to a human reading it, and that's the actual risk with a semantically loaded string.

How people use .vip, and how to set one up

Named examples of .vip in use cluster around access and exclusivity. Posh.vip lists exclusive events and clubs in large cities, WeTV.vip runs as an Asia-focused streaming platform, and puntacana.vip markets VIP travel packages for the Punta Cana resort area, all flagged in coverage of the extension from Register.Domains. The same source points out that among the most-visited .vip sites, cryptocurrency projects and online casino offers turn up a lot, which is worth knowing before you pick this suffix for a business that has nothing to do with either.

Before going live, note that the registry does not publish a mandatory HTTPS or HSTS requirement for .vip, unlike some tightly regulated extensions, so certificate setup is down to your host as normal. DNSSEC is supported at the registry level if your DNS provider offers it, according to TLD-List. On email, .vip's association with crypto and casino traffic means some spam filters treat unfamiliar .vip senders with more caution than a legacy TLD would get, so warm up any new mailbox gradually and keep an eye on deliverability. As a primary domain it suits membership portals and personal brands where the word fits naturally; for a general business it often works better as a redirect or campaign domain. One naming tip: 'VIP' already signals status on its own, so avoid stacking it with words like 'club' or 'premium' in the same name. Brand.vip reads better than brandvipclub.vip.

.vip alternatives

.club

Built around membership and community naming, overlapping with .vip's loyalty and fan-club use but without the luxury connotation.

.me

Better suited to personal branding and creator sites where the individual's name matters more than a status word.

.live

Fits events, streaming and access pages, an alternative when the emphasis is on a live event rather than exclusivity.

.top

A low-cost generic alternative for buyers who want a short domain without the status framing or the crypto and casino association some .vip sites carry.

.vip questions

Who runs the .vip registry now, and has that changed?

.vip has been run by Registry Services, LLC, a GoDaddy Registry outfit, since September 2021, when operational control changed hands. Before that, Minds + Machines held the backend job, going all the way back to the extension's launch in 2016.

Sources: iana.org, namefi.io

Can anyone register a .vip domain?

Yes. .vip is a wide-open gTLD, no eligibility checks, no membership rules, no local-presence requirement. Anyone can register one, provided the name is free and it sticks to the registry's standard character rules.

Sources: namefi.io, openprovider.com

What registration terms does .vip allow?

A .vip domain can be registered for a minimum of one year and a maximum of ten, and renewed in the same increments. That's standard practice across most generic gTLDs, so nothing unusual here.

Sources: openprovider.com

Are some .vip domains priced higher than others?

Yes. The registry flags certain names as premium, and those carry variable pricing well above the standard registration and renewal fees. Check a name's status with a registrar before you assume it'll register at the normal rate, because a lot of buyers get caught out by this.

Sources: tld-list.com

What happens if a .vip domain is not renewed on time?

ICANN policy sets a 30-day Redemption Grace Period after a domain is deleted, and during that window the previous registrant can still restore it. The exact length of the grace period and the restore fee are down to individual registrars, not the .vip registry itself, so the numbers you'll see quoted differ from one provider to the next.
