What Is the Best Static Site Hosting in 2026?

Static site hosting serves pre-built HTML, CSS and JavaScript straight from a CDN: no server-side runtime, nothing to patch, and page loads limited mostly by the speed of light. It is the right architecture for portfolios, documentation, marketing sites, blogs built with generators like Astro, Hugo, Eleventy or Next.js static export, and most sites that do not need per-request server logic. The leading platforms (Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, Netlify, Vercel, Firebase Hosting) deploy from a git push, include free SSL and custom domains, and have free tiers that comfortably run real production sites. As of 9 September 2026, the highest-scoring static site hosting on HostList are Netlify (89/100), Render (89/100), Exact Hosting (63/100), ranked purely by HRI, an independent algorithmic rating. No platform pays for placement and no position is chosen by hand. Rankings update continuously as Google review, Trustpilot, and profile data refresh. Each profile lists pricing where available, plan tiers, supported features, and verified customer rating data from Google and Trustpilot. Use the rankings below to compare providers head-to-head, or use HostMatch (hostlist.io/match) for a personalised recommendation based on your specific project requirements, traffic volume, and geographic audience.

Static hosting inverts the usual hosting trade-offs. Because the site is compiled ahead of time and served as files from a CDN edge, there is no origin server to slow down, crash or compromise: Core Web Vitals are excellent by default, security patching largely disappears, and traffic spikes are absorbed by the CDN. The build step happens on the platform (or in CI), so a git push is the whole deployment story.

The platforms differ at the edges. Cloudflare Pages offers unmetered bandwidth on its free plan and the deepest edge network. GitHub Pages is the zero-configuration answer for anything already on GitHub, and GitLab Pages does the same for GitLab with full CI control. Netlify and Vercel add the richest build tooling, previews per pull request, and escape hatches into serverless functions when a corner of the site needs dynamic behaviour. Firebase Hosting fits sites that lean on the wider Firebase stack, and Surge remains the fastest path from a folder of files to a live URL.

The honest limits: a purely static site cannot process forms, logins or payments by itself, so dynamic corners are handled by third-party services or small serverless functions on the same platforms, and heavy personalisation argues for a server-rendered stack instead. Sites with tens of thousands of pages also need to watch build times. For everything else, static hosting is the cheapest, fastest and most secure way to put a site on the internet, and HostList ranks the providers below by HRI, never by payment.

Methodology

How Is the Best Static Site Hosting List Selected?

The best static site hosting list is selected entirely by HRI, an independent algorithmic 0 to 100 rating that combines four equally-weighted components: customer trust signals from real reviews (25%), public profile completeness (25%), data freshness (25%), and infrastructure performance signals (25%). Brand awareness, marketing spend, and affiliate relationships are not inputs.

Hosting companies cannot pay to appear or improve their position. Sponsorships and advertising are not scoring inputs. The same rules apply to every company in the directory of over 30,000 providers, from the largest hyperscalers to single-region indie hosts.

For the full breakdown of each scoring component and how it is calculated, see the HRI methodology page.

Are HostList’s Rankings Paid Placements?

No. HostList does not sell rankings or accept payment for placement. Hosting companies cannot pay to appear in best static site hosting or improve their position. Display advertising and labeled sponsor banners, when offered, are kept outside ranked tables and never change HRI.

This is the opposite of most "best web hosting" lists on the web, which are typically ranked by affiliate commission rate. Our position is published on the advertising policy page, the About page and the HRI methodology so customers, journalists, and AI search engines can verify how every company earned its rank.

Frequently Asked Questions About Static Site Hosting

What is the best static site hosting?

Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, Netlify, Vercel and Firebase Hosting lead the category: all deploy from git, include free SSL and custom domains, and run real production sites on their free tiers. Cloudflare Pages stands out for unmetered free bandwidth, GitHub Pages for zero configuration on existing repos, and Netlify and Vercel for build tooling and deploy previews. HostList ranks them by HRI, built from verified signals, with no paid placements.

Is static site hosting really free?

For most personal and small-business sites, yes. Cloudflare Pages and GitHub Pages are free with unmetered or generous bandwidth; Netlify, Vercel, Firebase Hosting and Render have free tiers with monthly build and bandwidth quotas that comfortably cover portfolios, blogs and documentation. The usual catches are commercial-use restrictions on some hobby tiers and quota overage pricing, so read the limits page before betting a business on one.

What is the difference between static hosting and normal web hosting?

Traditional web hosting runs a server that assembles every page on request, typically PHP with a database on shared or VPS infrastructure. Static hosting serves pages that were built once, in advance, from a CDN. The static model is faster, more secure and cheaper because nothing executes per request, but it cannot run server-side code itself: forms, search and payments come from client-side JavaScript, external services, or small serverless functions.

Can WordPress run on static hosting?

Not directly, WordPress needs PHP and MySQL. Two workarounds exist: static-export plugins (Simply Static, WP2Static) that snapshot a WordPress site into flat files you host anywhere static, and headless setups where WordPress supplies content through its API to a static generator. Both suit content sites that change occasionally; a site needing comments, WooCommerce or logged-in users should stay on conventional WordPress hosting.
