HOW HOSTSCORE™ WORKS
An independent, algorithmic approach to rating hosting providers. No pay-to-play. No editorial bias. Just data.
WHAT IS HOSTSCORE?
HostScore™ is a composite rating from 0 to 100 that measures the overall quality of a web hosting provider. It combines multiple data points into a single, easy-to-understand number that helps you compare hosts at a glance.
Every hosting company in our directory receives a HostScore based on publicly available data. The higher the score, the better the host performs across our evaluation criteria. Scores are recalculated monthly to reflect the latest data.
SCORING CATEGORIES
HostScore is calculated across five weighted categories. Each category contributes a percentage of the total score.
Uptime monitoring, page load speed, Time to First Byte (TTFB), and server response consistency. We test from multiple global locations.
How quickly and effectively a host resolves issues. Includes availability of support channels, response times, and community feedback on support quality.
Pricing relative to features offered, renewal price transparency, money-back guarantees, and overall cost-effectiveness across plan tiers.
Breadth and quality of included features: control panel, automated backups, free SSL, staging environments, CDN, email, and developer tools.
Aggregated user reviews from Google, Trustpilot, and G2. Also considers company stability, years in operation, and industry recognition.
DATA SOURCES
We use publicly available data including automated monitoring, published benchmark results, official pricing pages, and community reviews. We do not accept payment for higher scores.
Uptime, speed, and TTFB checks from multiple locations
Aggregated scores from Google, Trustpilot, and G2
Pricing, features, and company information
User reviews, forum discussions, and industry reports
HOW OFTEN SCORES UPDATE
HostScore is recalculated monthly based on the latest available data. Review scores are refreshed periodically from Google, Trustpilot, and G2. Performance monitoring data is collected continuously. When a hosting company claims their listing and updates their profile, those changes are reflected in the next scoring cycle.

TECHNICAL BREAKDOWN
Under the hood, HostScore is built from six technical components totalling 100 points.
Based on real customer reviews across Google, Trustpilot, and G2. Uses a continuous formula: (rating/5) × (min(reviews,500)/500) × weight.
Measures how thoroughly a host has filled out their profile. Complete profiles help users make informed decisions.
Awarded when a host links back to HostList from their website. This signals partnership and mutual trust.
Hosts who have verified ownership of their listing through email or DNS verification.
Rewards hosts who keep their information up to date. Full points if updated within 30 days, linear decay to 90 days.
Uptime and response time monitoring. Currently a placeholder until real monitoring data is fully integrated.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
Can I pay to improve my score?
No. HostScore is entirely algorithmic and based on publicly verifiable data. No amount of money can influence it.
How often is it updated?
Scores are recalculated monthly based on the latest available data. Review data is refreshed periodically from Google, Trustpilot, and G2.
Why is my score low?
Common reasons: missing profile fields (description, logo), no reviews on Google/Trustpilot, stale profile. Claim your listing and complete your profile to improve.
What’s a good score?
70+ is excellent and earns the Top Ranked badge. 50–69 is solid. Below 40 means there’s significant room for improvement.
Do internal HostList reviews count?
Not yet — we currently rely on third-party review platforms for trust scoring. Internal review scoring is planned.
