Methodology

HOW HOSTSCORE WORKS

An independent, algorithmic approach to rating hosting providers. No pay-to-play. No editorial bias. Just data.

WHAT IS HOSTSCORE?

HostScore™ is a composite rating from 0 to 100 that measures the overall quality of a web hosting provider. It combines multiple data points into a single, easy-to-understand number that helps you compare hosts at a glance.

Every hosting company in our directory receives a HostScore based on publicly available data. The higher the score, the better the host performs across our evaluation criteria. Scores are recalculated monthly to reflect the latest data.

HOW OFTEN DOES HOSTSCORE UPDATE?

HostScore is recalculated monthly based on the latest available data. Review scores are refreshed periodically from Google, Trustpilot, and G2. Performance monitoring data is collected continuously. When a hosting company claims their listing and updates their profile, those changes are reflected in the next scoring cycle.

LIMITATIONS

No rating system is perfect. HostScore is one data point among many you should consider when choosing a hosting provider. We encourage you to:

  • Read multiple reviews from different sources
  • Test hosting providers with a trial or money-back guarantee
  • Consider your specific requirements (location, tech stack, budget)
  • Verify critical claims (uptime guarantees, support hours) directly with the provider

WHAT IS THE HOSTSCORE FORMULA?

Under the hood, HostScore is the sum of four equally-weighted components, each scored 0 to 25 points for a total out of 100.

Trust25pts

Aggregates verified customer review signals and ownership status. The continuous formula combines Google review average and volume, Trustpilot score, G2 rating, claimed/verified ownership, and the host's founding year. Hosts in a known performance tier receive a small bonus.

Google rating (0 to 8) + review volume on log scale (0 to 7) + founded year (0 to 5) + verified-claim status (0 to 5)
Completeness25pts

Measures how thoroughly a host has filled out their profile. More complete profiles give buyers more to evaluate and rank higher.

Website URL, description, logo, founding year, plan data, segment classification, location detail
Freshness25pts

Rewards hosts that keep their listing current. Stale data carries no signal value to buyers and is discounted.

25pts within 30 days, 20pts within 90, 15pts within 180, 10pts within a year, 5pts beyond
Performance25pts

Tier signal based on real uptime and response-time data where available. Hosts in established performance tiers carry over to the Trust component as a small reliability bonus.

Tier-mapped score based on infrastructure and monitoring data; default 5pts when no signal is available yet
