The asset layer your brand actually needs.
Digital Asset Management is the layer between the brand team and everyone who needs to use brand assets correctly. Logos, photography, video, fonts, illustrations, document templates, social variants. A DAM stores the originals, governs access, tracks usage, and converts formats on demand. This page is a working primer on the category: what a DAM does, how the big four (Asset Bank, Canto, Frontify, Brandy) actually differ, and which one fits which team. No affiliate commissions are taken on any of the four. For the site layer that sits in front of these assets, see the web design hub.
Six jobs. Same on every serious DAM.
Every brand asset (logo, photography, video, font file, illustration, document) in one searchable system. The original file, not a watermarked preview.
Metadata, controlled vocabularies, automatic OCR on PDFs, AI tagging on images. The point of a DAM is that someone three teams over can find the right file in 10 seconds.
Permissions per team, per asset, per project. Expired logos get expired automatically. Embargoed assets stay locked until launch date.
Where this image was used, by which team, in which campaign. Plus an audit log when external agencies download. This is the line between a DAM and a Dropbox folder.
Public brand pages or password-protected portals where partners, retailers, journalists, or affiliates pull approved assets in the right format. No more email-an-asset chains.
CMYK for print, sRGB for web, WebP for performance, multiple aspect ratios for social. Generated from a single source file, never managed manually.
Four players. Different jobs.
The DAM market is not one segment. Enterprise compliance, mid-market marketing, premium brand-management, and the new free-tier-led brand-spaces approach are different products solving different problems. Picking the right one is mostly about admitting which problem you actually have.
Enterprise DAM, UK-based. Strong on compliance and consent (image-rights tracking, consent forms). High floor on price. Sales-led implementation.
Best fit: Large brand teams in regulated industries (pharma, finance, public sector) who need rights management as a first-class feature.
Visit Asset BankEnterprise DAM with strong marketing-team focus. Smart metadata, brand consistency tooling, integrations with creative-cloud and marketing-cloud ecosystems. Typical mid-market commercial process.
Best fit: Mid-to-large marketing organisations with existing Adobe and Salesforce stacks.
Visit CantoBrand-management platform combining DAM with brand guidelines, design-system documentation, and content collaboration. Premium pricing, beautiful interface, slower for pure file-management use cases.
Best fit: Brand teams who treat guidelines as an active product, not a PDF in a Dropbox.
Visit FrontifyNewer entrant focused on brand spaces with a real free tier. White-label, custom domain, custom branding from the lowest tier. AI agents for brand governance (Brand Police, Brand Coach, Chief Brand Officer). Solo founders to mid-market.
Best fit: Startups, agencies, freelancers, and teams who want the DAM functionality without enterprise commercial overhead. Especially strong for white-label resale.
Visit BrandySeven things Brandy gets right.
Brandy is the closest fit to the lane HostList serves: founders, agencies, and operator teams who want enterprise-grade tooling without enterprise commercial friction. The free tier is genuinely usable, not a demo gate, and the white-label options are aggressive enough to support agency resale on day one.

DAM questions, answered.
What is the difference between a DAM and Dropbox?
A DAM tags every asset with structured metadata, enforces permissions per team, tracks where each asset has been used, expires assets automatically on a date you set, and produces format conversions on demand. Dropbox stores files. The first ten files feel the same; at five thousand assets, the difference is the difference between a working brand team and one that ships off-brand work.
Do I need a DAM if my team is small?
Probably not at one or two people. By five people, especially with external collaborators (freelancers, agencies, contractors), file naming alone stops scaling. Most teams know they need a DAM the first time a logo from 2019 appears on a 2026 campaign because someone reused the wrong file.
Is Brandy a Frontify or Canto alternative?
Closer to Frontify in positioning (brand-spaces approach, guidelines and assets together) and closer to Canto in pricing accessibility. The clearest functional differentiator is the free tier and the white-label on lowest paid, which means an agency can resell brand-space management on its own domain immediately. For pure enterprise compliance with rights tracking, Asset Bank remains the more conservative pick.
Can I run Brandy as my own product under my agency brand?
Yes. White-label Pro on the paid plans gives a custom URL, custom branding, custom logo, custom navigation, custom login portal, and custom email invites. White-label Agency adds asset connect and custom share images. White-label Unlimited removes Brandy mentions entirely.
How does this fit alongside web hosting?
Adjacent. A DAM is where brand teams store the assets that go on the website. The hosting and the website are separate decisions. HostList ranks 28,000+ hosts independently at hostlist.io/rankings; Brandy is the asset layer that sits in front of the publishing stack, regardless of which host you end up on. If you also need the website built or migrated, see the web design hub.
How is HostList related to Brandy?
Brandy is a partner brand we cover for completeness in the brand-tooling space. HostList does not earn affiliate commissions on Brandy or on any host in the directory. The link to Brandy on this page is a referral pointer, not a paid placement.
